Burma’s national champion, Tun Tun Min, defeated Australian challenger Adem Yilmaz by a knockout in the first ever Burmese Lethwei (traditional Burmese boxing) event held in Japan.
Competing at the Lethwei Grand Prix in Japan 2016 event on Thursday in front of a full house of mostly Japanese boxing fans at Tokyo’s Korakuen Hall, Tun Tun Min’s bout was the highlight of the evening, which featured four other contests.
After winning his fight in dramatic style, Tun Tun Min said he was proud to bring home honours to his country, Burma, and he thanked his fans for their support.
U Wunna of Myanmar Media Group, co-organiser of the Lethwei Grand Prix in Japan 2016 event, said this was the first time that traditional Burmese boxing had been displayed in Japan, and that he was pleased with the success.
Lethwei is a Burmese martial art, similar to kick-boxing or Thailand’s muay thai.
